Today, our board of directors joined the Kaohsiung Independent Federation of Union (KIFU) for an insightful exchange with union brothers and sisters, sharing personal journeys from union discovery to ongoing involvement.
Chairman Xu Zhong initiated the exchange by discussing Chunghwa Telecom's labor movement history and underlining the need for unions to modernize and internationalize. He concluded with a powerful message urging leaders to refrain from abusing their power. Our union president, Carlos, then shared the union's founding principles and growth. He highlighted instances of China Steel's unprofessionalism, arbitrary personnel placements, and the appointment of unqualified individuals, leading to workplace bullying and tragic consequences such as a colleague succumbing to cancer after retirement. It was from this inhumane management system that the union reflected, developed a sense of rights, and gave rise to Taiwan's only independent union for merchant ship crew members.
During the union's formation, there were constant suppressions and threats from China Steel management. In the relentless pursuit to eliminate the union, China Steel's tactics included intimidation to force employees to withdraw from the union and interference in seafarers' union elections. The bureaucratic autocracy is no less severe than that of the Communist Party. As the union delved into maritime labor issues, it became clear that seafarers' rights were crucial for the entire national shipping industry, making it a war for the dignity of Taiwanese seafarers' labor.
In today’s session, all China Steel Express (CSE) union leaders shared experiences of oppression and harm from the company. Before the union's establishment, they tolerated mistreatment to ensure smooth vessel operations but faced accusations, office bullying, delayed relief for on-the-job accidents, and insufficient compensation. Some were unfairly blamed and dismissed. One leader endured mistreatment for participating in union activities and becoming union leader, facing false accusations and had meetings with superiors five times a month. Chairman Xu Zhong showed his support and commitment to opposing injustice. We are here to warn CSE management against further oppression, backed by numerous audio recordings. For the sake of company reputation, a turnaround is imperative.
The work nature of members from both unions varies significantly. Chunghwa Telecom employees primarily work in office settings, while seafarers spend extended periods at sea. Understanding the work patterns of merchant ship crew members can be challenging for outsiders. This exchange provided Chunghwa Telecom leaders with valuable insights into the unique challenges of seafarer life. Despite the distinct work environments, both unions encounter similar issues, with employers consistently finding ways to undermine and eliminate union presence.
Hence, it is crucial for the union to actively seek external support in order to counteract employer oppression. Chairman Xu Zhong emphasized to CSE Union leaders that the union plays a pivotal role in safeguarding its members from unfair treatment. It is essential to recognize that only through the union can we effectively halt the exploitation of labor and address the wrongful actions of the company. The stories shared by CSE union leaders today were imbued with warmth, underscoring the importance of your involvement. We eagerly anticipate more passionate participation from our brothers and sisters.
